Snooping around the Internet for some interesting content I found this little gem from the Colbert Report about GPS cell phone tracking. Apparently, Sprint had a cell phone tracking application that they turned on so that they could more easily disclose the location of their customers to the government. In just about a year, they have turned over around eight million (8,000,000) locations at the request of the government. That amounts to just a hair under 22,000 requests a day.

Here is the entire segment of the video, which also includes jabs at Obama, Yahoo, Google, and the American people:

While I personally find this type of thing pretty funny, it probably does not give the entire story either. For example, when a 9-1-1 call is made on a cell phone, companies like Sprint, Verizon, AT&T, etc. are required by law to be able to hand over the position of the cell phone that made the 9-1-1 call to a government agency. Some companies d this through cell tower trilateration while others use GPS. I believe that Sprint uses GPS, and with somewhere between fifteen and twenty million (15,000,000 to 20,000,000) 9-1-1 calls a year it would seem that at least some portion of the cell phone locations handed over by Sprint would have something to do with that.

In general, the idea that the government is somehow systematically tracking its citizens and violating their privacy for no good reason is something that I personally find humorous. In general, I think that the government is just trying to do its job of protecting its citizens and that it has no ill intent to law abiding individuals. There is no secret agenda and the cell phone GPS tracking is not as widespread as some people seem to fear.

There is a real danger for people when they are willing to exchange certain individual liberties for security, but I’m not very sure that knowing where you are is a violation of your individual liberty. A lot of people disagree with me, so I take that with a grain of salt. But to me, there is nothing about where I go or what I do that I feel like I need to hide from the rest of the world. If ever I was charged with some sort of crime or was suspected of being a terrorist I think that there would be nothing in my personal location history that I would want to suppress.

With that said, there is a type of GPS tracking for cell phones that I do find particularly dastardly. It has to do with taking my information and using to try and sell me crap. The thing that I don’t like about this is that I do not want to be sold stuff and I particularly do not want to be sold stuff based upon the places I go. I want my location information to be something that is between me, my family, all the people that see me at the places I go, all the people that see me going to the places I go, and potentially the government if they have some reason to want to know where I go. The fact that private companies can also use that information to make me part of their marketing campaign rubs me the wrong way.

In general, I am happy for little bits of GPS cell phone tracking humor like this clip from the Colbert Report. It exposes more people to the things that cell phones can do and how they are being used by the governments, corporations, and individuals. With this knowledge people can make informed decisions about how they want to use their mobile devices and can be empowered to take full advantage of the technology at their disposal.

We have been posting some information here about free GPS cell phone trackers that are being offered by various companies out there. First, we took a look at the Google Latitude. This free bit of software works in a Google Maps interface and is among one of the best social tracking applications for cell phones out there. After that, we took a look at BuddWay – a travelers best friend when it comes to free cell phone tracking software. This little piece of software is ideal for these globe trotters because it enables them to interact with their travels in a real and useful way sharing their data with friends and relatives while editing it all in real time from their own phone.

In our quest to find more free tracking software we came across a GPS cell phone tracker gag that gave us a little smirk. The site is at the top of the search engines for a few different searches related to cell phone tracking and we’ll take a look at this gag in a little bit deeper detail below.

About the Gag

If you go to Google and type in “GPS cell phone tracking” into the search parameters you will find a link at the very top of the results to a site with the following description:

Mobile phone tracking

Satellite Tracking GSM mobile phone tracking system via the GPS – TRACK satellite network. Based on repeater triangulation, the system tracks mobile phones …

To the average person doing a search in Google this looks totally legit. Most people are going to click on this link and see the following website:

What few people will notice is that the url that they clicked on in Google has automatically redirected to a new url as seen in their browsers address bar. What they see is what looks like an official site of some GPS tracking company. As one reads more and more of the text on the page they will be convinced that this is in fact a company that can provide tracking for cell phones.

All it seems like a user needs to do is enter a phone number into the search box and they will be able to use the website as a cell phone tracker. While the site does not come out and say that it is really a mobile tracker, it certainly does not let you know that the whole thing is a gag either. They make statements about how the website is not responsible for “abuse by the user” – implying that a user could abuse the mobile tracker available on the website. In order to abuse it, the tracker has to work. And in order for the tracker to work the different claims on the website have to be true.

If one believes the implications on the page they will enter a cell phone number. What follows is some clever animation that is supposed to give the user the impression that they are using a GPS cell phone tracker. You are told that the GPS is initializing and getting a lock on the cell phone. You are then shown a satellite image of a city which zooms in several times revealing a small neighborhood. The final image is a pixelated image of a man and woman in a hot tube.

The gag ends by redirecting you to a page with some not very useful information about GPS and GPS tracking.

So instead of getting cell phone tracking for free you end up getting a whole lot of nothing. Maybe you get a little smirk for buying into the hype or forum post that sent you there, but that is it.

I know that for me, the first time I got to the site I was a little skeptical. I wondered if they would take the number that I put into the fields and sell it off to some telemarketer who would then hound that person with call after call trying to get them to buy something or make some donation to some charitable organization. So instead of entering a real number I just entered a phoney number – something like 555-0555. It still worked and I got the same cell phone tracker gag that everyone else does.

If you are looking for some cell phone GPS tracking software then I recommend that you take a look around this site and see what your options are. You won’t get any gags, just solid information about how to track mobile phones for real. So far, all of our articles are about software solutions that are 100% and that will not cost you a penny to download and install on your phone. They do not even charge you a subscription to use, but I cannot say that they are free because they all require you to have a data plan with your cell phone provider in order to work properly. But they are free in every other respect, so take a look around and get your cell phone tracking on!

BuddyWay is a free GPS cell phone tracking software that will enable any mobile phone or PDA with a built-in GPS to turn it into a GPS tracking device. It is a pretty full featured service geared toward people who love to take the road trip. The fact that it is targeted at people who are going to be hitting the road one has to look no farther than the About page of this free GPS cell phone tracker. It reads, “Going on a trip? Meeting your friends? Do you want to save your memories? Do you want to show others where you’ve been lately? You’ve came to the right place!” If that does not say that this is meant for people looking to use their cell phone to track and record their road trips, I do not know what would!

Here is a list of some of BuddyWays features:

Track any GPS-enabled phone or PDA in real-time online.

Save trips to look at later and relive all the glorious road trip moments.

BuddyWay allows you to share the trips with other people or to keep them to yourself.

Record special locations on your phone and make comments about them in real time for your followers, family, or friends back home to see directly from your mobile device.

Visualize your previous trips in 3-D on Google Earth with an easy import and save feature.

Record and view trip metrics and graphs such as trip duration, trip length, average and maximum speed, changes in your altitude, etc.

Setup geofence alerts that will notify you of upcoming areas of interest that you set.

This set of features is obvious geared to those who travel extensively or who are making some type of life-event journey like backpacking through Europe or taking a coast to coast trip in the United States. I mean the possibilities for fun are pretty extensive.

BuddyWay Free GPS Cell Phone Tracking And Europe

Wouldn’t it be great to be able to make a detailed log of all the places you go and all the things that you see on a trip to Europe? Well, that can be made possible with this cell phone tracking software. It might look something like this. You and a small group of friends decide that you want to go to Europe together to do some back packing. You’ll go all over the place, but you really want to hit up the the British Isles and the Continent. In fact, you have several things that you desperately want to see and a host of other things that you would not mind seeing if your journeys take you in that direction.

You hear about GPS cell phone tracking and how it can be used with pretty much any cell phone these days and you decide to give it a once over to see what all the hoopla is about. Almost immediately you are smitten by the idea and want to get the absolute best software so that you can make a detailed history of your trip as well as share your adventures with friends and family back home. You also want to stay safe and secure and be able to let your friends on the trip with you know where you are at at any given moment so that you can help each other out if it is necessary or hook up to catch some cool art in a museum.

Several cell phone trackers creep up your list but you finally decided that you want to go with the free GPS cell phone tracking software from BuddyWay since it offers some interesting features that you want to take advantage of. In particular, you like that you can set up alerts for when you approach areas of interest that you get to define yourself. Before you even go on your trip you make a list of all the different things that you would love to be able to see or do while in that city. You then decide which places or sites are worthy of setting up an alert for – like the Eiffel tower, or an awesome restaurant overlooking the Venetian waterways; it doesn’t really matter what it is as long as it interests you. Setting these alerts up before hand will give you the freedom as you are traveling about a city to stop at little side excursions that will interest you whenever you feel like it.

Another benefit to using a traveler friendly GPS cell phone tracking software is that it lets you make comments about your trip from your phone. As you are standing in the Alps watching the sun set in a bedazzling array of colors you can snap photos and breath it all in. Then, when the sun drops below the horizon and the deep purple of dusk fades into the star speckled black of night you can take out your cell phone and mark the spot where your heart jumped for joy at the resplendent beauty of God’s creation.

Or, as you walk through the old, worn down streets of some ancient city you found yourself struck by the weight of history and sense a profound change in your soul you can sit and stew in the wonder that is humanity. After the moment has passed, you can make a not of your spot, maybe take a picture, and make a brief comment about what when on in your BuddyWay software.

As you make all these little notes your family and friends get to experience your journey and grow with you as these experiences gradually change the way you think about the world around you. They will get to taste what you see and feel what you hear as you share it all with them. This is the power of GPS cell phone tracking technology when used appropriately and safely.

BuddyWay will also allow you to stay connected with your group of friends on the trip with you. It might come in handy when there are different places that people want to go in a specific city. Maybe some want to go to museums, while others want to get a feel for the city by walking the streets and eating in local restaurants, and others still want to hit up some happening bars and clubs. As all three go about their way if something particularly interesting comes up they can quickly share it with their friends and let them know where the action is at on their cell phones with little or no effort. Finding them is even a cinch since they know exactly where they are thanks to the mobile phone tracking they are using.

Finally, once the trip is over and done you can relive it all by downloading your travel onto Google Earth and play it back for yourself, your travel companions, your family, and your friends for all to experience exactly what you saw. This will put all the old boring slide shows of yesteryear far behind you as you walk your family around the city that you experienced. You can be their virtual tour guide through the ups and downs and ins and outs of your journey. Nothing will be missed.

Free GPS cell phone trackers like BuddyWay provide a great service to travelers of all interest levels and experience. Anyone can benefit from being able to review their trips with a host of information at their disposal. While BuddyWay may not be the most social of all the free trackers out there for cell phones, it does provide an excellent product for the traveler market. Anyone interested in what their travels look like should definitely give BuddyWay a shot at being their GPS tracking software for their cell phone. It really is that good.

You can learn more about this cell phone tracker here: BuddyWay

More Free GPS Cell Phone Trackers

Google Latitude GPS Cell Phone Trackers – Google Latitude is a great social cell phone tracker designed for friends and family. It serves as a way for others to know the exact location of all the people on their friends list.

Google Latitude is a free GPS cell phone tracker brought to the public by none other than the search powerhouse Google. This service is billed as a way for people to stay in contact with one another, but it can be used for much more than that if you are willing to expand your horizons a little and dream big. Google Latitude works with Google Maps and the GPS in your phone to broadcast your location across the internet to people on your friends list. You have control over who makes that list and will be able to control whether or not you want to let a person know your location even after you accept them as a friend. This is a very powerful tracking application and should be one of the first that a person considers when seeking out a free GPS cell phone tracking software for themselves, their family, or their business.

Free Google Map GPS Cell Phone Tracker

Here is a quick video that Google put together to showcase their Latitude product. It should give you a pretty good understanding of what the product is all about and since it is so short I recommend that everyone take the time to watch it:

As you can see, Latitude utilized Google Maps to provide the interface through which users are able to access the tracking data. Since many Internet users are already very familiar with Google Maps, this makes this tracking application extremely user friendly. You don’t really need to learn anything new if you want to use this product, and that is a strong selling point to me for novice users. Also, I have to admit that I think that this service is pretty dang cool because of the way that it integrates so easily with all sort of other Google products. It seems like it is tailor made for highly mobile individuals who have already bought into to using other Google services such as Gmail, Maps, and Talk.

But even if you aren’t bought into using all the different Google services, it still seems like it should be the place to start for a wide range of groups who might be interested in using GPS tracking technology for their cell phone. Among these major groups are going to be families, groups of friends, and small businesses.

Google Latitude for Families

Google Latitude for Friends

Google Latitude for Small Businesses

Google Latitude: Free GPS Cell Phone Tracking For Family

It is obvious from the previous video that one of the two main groups that Google is targeting with this product are families. There are two main selling points for families who are considering getting this free GPS cell phone tracking software . The first is that it enables them to stay connected to each other, and by virtue of this connection they can help keep each other safe. Let’s look at an example of how this might work in order for us to see how useful this type of software is going to be for a family. Imagine that there is a family of four – the Netheringtons are comprised of Will, the protective and caring father; Jill, the sweet and comfort loving wife; Susan, a 17 year old High School senior; and Kevin, a rambunctious tween who loves soccer and practical jokes. This family is pretty typical when it comes to all the things that they are involved in. Both parents work and the kids live a life packed full of school and extra-curricular activities. Sometimes it is all they can do to keep up with each other. That is where a GPS cell phone tracking program like Google Latitude comes in.

Each of the Netheringtons has a pretty cool smartphone with GPS enabled on it. Being savvy consumers they have opted to install the Google Maps because of the free navigation it provides on their sweet Motorolla Droid cell phones. After watching a video about how Latitude works they decided to take it for a spin. Imagine that the following circumstance occurs. Kevin, the rambunctious tween is out at soccer practice while mom, dad, and sister are out and about using the family cars. A freak thunderstorm comes barreling toward the soccer pitch and the coach quiclly realizes he has to get the kids home and out from under the flashing lightning. Now Kevin needs to call someone to get to him quickly so that he can get out of harms way.

He pulls up his Droid and in a few moments he has his Google GPS cell phone tracking up and open. He begins to cycle through his family to see who is closest to him so he can give them a ring to come pick him up. Mom is still at work on the opposite side of time. She won’t be able to pick him up. Dad appears to be sitting still on the Interstate, which doesn’t seem like a good thing. Sis is the closest person and luckily she is just around the corner at a friends house. Kevin gives her a ring on the tele and is saved from danger and a torrential downfall.

This is only one example of the many things that this type of GPS cell phone tracking system could do for a family that is on the move. If you need to know of any more situations, leave a comment in the comment section and I will think of some more to put there. Or you might just want to sit and think about it for a minute and I’m sure tons would begin to flood your mind.

The second selling point for families is going to be the increased efficiency that a tracking system for cell phones is going to bring to the unit. Imagine that in our same family of 4 one of the members is interested in getting some light ranch so that they can dip their popcorn into it. There is none in the refrigerator and they want it so bad that they are willing to do something crazy to get it, like waste gas and drive to the store. But instead of doing something rash and contribute to man-made climate change they decided to pull out their Google Latitude installed cell phone and see if any of their family members who are out on the town are close to a grocery store. Second later they come to find that a member of their family is right near a grocery store so they give them a ring on the tele and work everything out.

These are just two example of what GPS tracking can offer families of various sizes and needs. Larger families could possibly benefit even more than smaller families if they all have a mobile phone with GPS and a data plan.

Google Latitude: Free GPS Cell Phone Tracking For Friends

The benefits for friends are very similar to those experienced by families that decide to use Google Latitude. But there are a few ways that the service changes when taken outside the context of family and into the context of friends and acquaintances. For one thing, safety is generally less of a concern for a group of friends than for families, though the desire for safety is not necessarily lost – especially for single females. With a GPS tracking app on their phones they can be able to keep in contact with each other from before they get together to go out to the club to hanging out with each other at the club to monitoring each others’ journey home. Even if they go home with someone they meet at the club, friends can see where they are going and can check in with them at some mutually appointed time.

But by in large the most common way that this app will be used by friends is to let them get into contact with each other while they are on the move. If you are sitting at home on a Friday night with nothing much to do you can always pop out your cell phone and check Latitude to see if there is a group of your friends in the same area. If they are and you feel comfortable hanging with the group of friends you could always give them a ring and see what they are up. You probably don’t want to invite yourself over, but it might be good just to inquire what is going on to see if you can get in on the action.

Then there is the utility of being able to use it when you are in trouble and need a helping hand. If your tire gets flat or you are on a blind date that has flopped miserably and you need to get a ride then you can find a friend who close to you to give you hand. Being able to pick a close friend will ensure that you will be picked up quickly and will prevent you from rubbing a friend the wrong way by asking them to come all the way from across town to help you out.

Privacy is definitely more of a concern with a group of friends than it is with a family. If you would like to learn more about how to keep your activities private from certain friends you should check out the privacy section.

Google Latitude: Free GPS Cell Phone Tracking For Small Businesses

While the use of Google Latitude by small businesses does not appear to have been on the radar for the marketers of this product, it was one of the first things that popped into my mind when I heard about it. Small businesses, especially those with delivery or service components, could use this free GPS cell phone tracking service to help route individual workers and keep things working efficiently and smoothly. For example, a small plumbing business could use Latitude to make sure that the closest employee gets routed to the next emergency service call; a delivery provider could send the closest van to pick up a special package; or a security agency could know exactly where all of its agents are at a given moment. This could be a very powerful application for tech savvy small businesses seeking to find a cheap and effective way to implement some sort of GPS tracking solution.

While it probably would not be as robust as a commercial grade GPS fleet tracking service, you certainly cannot beat the free price tag associated with it. Another benefit over a commercial option is that you will not have to purchase any additional GPS tracking devices in order to make it work. All you need are cell phone that your workers or the business already own. This makes it even more cost effective when compared with a commercial grade tracking program. The only thing that you would have to do is set up Google accounts for all your employees so that they can utilize the service.

Google Latitude Privacy Options

Making sure that the data that you want to keep private is kept private is a concern for Google, the folks behind Latitude. They put together the following video to help consumers understand what they need to do to keep things private that need to be kept private:

Google Latitude in Summary

This is a good overall product that stands at the forefront of free GPS cell phone tracking applications. Coming from Google you know that the product is quality and will be backed by one of the most powerful Internet and cell phone companies in the world. They have a vested interest in creating top notch products that are consumer friendly and powerful. If you are thinking of using some type of GPS cell phone tracking for your family, group of friends, or small business and want to find something free to use then Google Latitude should definitely be near the top of your list of services to try out.

Sometimes we just need an example of how GPS cell phone tracking actually works. There are lot of ways that we can do that – we could actually own a cell phone that is compatible with one of the many tracking apps available, or we could create our own cell phone tracker using the build provided by the people over at Open Cell Phone Tracker, or we can just read the news.

All you have to do is open up the news paper, or do a search on Google news, and you are going to find the police using cell phones the track the location of someone. Recently, the police used a cell phone owned by a 9 year old girl to track her location and recover her from her kidnapper.

The news paper articled opened like this:

Using technology more commonly seen in television crime dramas, an Athol police officer and a deputy chief in the town’s Fire Department were able to track a woman and her allegedly kidnapped 9-year-old granddaughter to a motel in south-central Virginia.

I mean we have all seen this type of thing happen in TV shows like NCIS, CSI, and Law and Order – but to actually read about it happening in real life is something else. Police are able to use this technology and they are able to use with great efficiency and accuracy. 20 years ago this 9 year-old child would have been taken and long gone by the time police would have been able to get things going to find her and even then they would have had to use a lot of man power to try and get this little girl back to her family. Now, with the advent of GPS technology in cell phone, all they had to do was turn on their computer.

You see, in 2005 the cell phone makers and carriers have been forced to provide a way to track calls made from cell phones to within 100 meters. This was primarily meant for police and the fire department to be able to back track the location of 911 calls and other distress signals but has since been used to track criminals, provide surveillance on a suspected criminals activities, and to help families better keep track of their kids and teens. This technology is extremely power and it is here to stay.

Thankfully, the police involved in this case were aware that the police have access to cell phone data like this in situations of child abduction and other criminal activity. So they called the child’s cell phone provider and got them to provide some location information when the cell phone was turned on.

This is a very important thing about GPS cell phone tracking - it only works when a cell phone is actually turned on.

Upon receiving the information from the cell provider the police were able to narrow down the child’s location and to make an informed decision about where she was located. They received some longitude and latitude coordinates from the cell phone provider and plugged it into one of those very handy and useful applications that everyone should become familiar with – Google Maps.

What they saw was nothing that special, just a field on a road. A little perplexed they when to street view to see if they could see anything that might be where the girl would be staying. Sure enough he found something that could be the child’s location:

Looking across a field, he said he saw a long building with a red roof that looked like a motel. He then did a search on Google for motels in Natural Bridge and found the Budget Inn-Natural Bridge, which, on a map, appeared to be close to the intersection he was looking at.

The police were then notified and the child was recovered and taken back to be with her family, all thanks to GPS cell phone tracking. This whole episode highlights a lot of the things that I love about this powerful technology:

It is highly, highly accessible. With the power of Google Maps and other free internet mapping applications you can use the information that you gather through your cell phone to get a great understanding of your location without very much effort. Simply type the coordinates into the search bar and you not only have your location on a map, but you also have pictures that help you understand exactly where you are.

It is very, very cheap. Tracking a cell phone requires no extra money to be paid since it is a capability that already exists within your phone. Now most cell phone carriers do charge consumers for the ability to track their own phones for personal use, but they don’t charge the police to do so and that is really the important thing. Sure it is nice to be able to know where your kids or your teenage daughter are at any given moment, but you really want the police to be able to do that more than you want to be able to do that.

It is accurate. 100 meters is pretty dang close, especially since you often have no idea where a person is located without the use of the GPS in the cell phone. If the police knew where she was within a 1000 meters they might have had a much harder time finding her – but 100 meters turned out to be a perfect number for them in this circumstance.

GPS technology is extremely powerful, but when you integrate it into one of the most widely available communication devices in the world you get a one of the most agile, unique, cost effective, and useful devices in the human arsenal – GPS tracking cell phones.

GPS cell phone tracking is a technology that is here and is available to anyone with a few extra dollars a months. Just the other day I saw that a cell phone provider is offering family cellphone tracking plans at prices as low as $5.99 a month for tracking on up to 4 phones. That is pretty powerful stuff for such a low price. Not only is cell phone tracking here, it is very affordable as well.

There are a lot of different reasons to use a service like this. The main ones are to track your kid’s driving habits, to keep your teenager safe, to locate lost and missing phones, and to assist in parenting activities.

Track Your Teen’s Driving With GPS Cell Phone Tracking

We all know that teenagers are the group most likely to be involved in fatal car crashes, but how does GPS cell phone tracking help with that? Well, some plan have the ability to track and store vector data. A vector is both the speed and direction of that the cell phone is traveling. This means that you can use your teenager’s cell phone as a way to track how fast they are driving the car.

We have all been teenagers before. We know how easy it is to get sucked into racing a friend or driving a little reckless on the way home from a friends house late at night. We have all done it and we all know what it is like. If our parents had been able to check on us they probably would have gotten upset and punished us – and too be honest, they would have been perfectly within their rights to do so. But they didn’t have GPS tracking to help them.

These days, parents can use GPS in cell phones to get this type of information from their children without even having to ask. Did your daughter drive safely home from her friends how last night? You can check by looking on your cell phone providers online tool. If she drove above the speed limit you will know and you can punish her accordingly. Her safety is the most important thing.

When using a mobile phone to keep track of your teens driving habits it is important that they know what you are doing. The reason behind this is that if they don’t know that you can track them, then this will not act as a deterent to poor driving habits. You want you teen to know that they will get caught driving poorly – that way they can make safe driving choices because they fear the consequences of poor driving.

Another reason to make your teenager aware of the GPS cell phone tracking that you are using is that it will make it easier to set the consequences for speeding and other dangerous driving practices. Setting appropriate and useful consequences for their poor driving habits is the most crucial part of this plan. They have to be fair but still heavily discourage the teen from breaking them. GPS tracking teenagers by cell phones to track your teens driving is best used as a deterrent.

Keep Your Teen Safe With GPS Cell Phone Tracking

Then there are issues of abduction and kidnapping. Teens go missing at an alarming rate in this country and what better way to track them down than through their cell phone? Almost every teen in America has one and the ease with which the authorities can use a turned on cell phone to track a person down is just as a calming as it can be alarming. With some training, a cellular phone is exactly what you want your child to have on them if the unthinkable happens.

It is important to note that this type of tracking does not costs parents anything. Cell phone companies are required by law to make all devices trackable by the police. What this means is that every phone, no matter if is GPS enable or not, is able to be tracked by your local police or the FBI. They will need some permission to begin tracking the phone, but because cell phone towers work off the principle of trilateration they are able to find the phones exact location simply because it is turned on. Now that is powerful safety equipment!

There is one caveat for GPS cellphone tracking to work in an instance where a teen is being done violence – the cell phone must be on. Properly training your teen on how to manage their cell phone in a hostage or kidnapping situation is key to helping recover your teen after it happens. Good training is always important.

Here are some useful tips to help your teen keep their phone away from detection:

Always keep the phone on and out of sight. Only turn it off if you need to save bateries or you know you are in a location that will not receive reception (like in a deep cave).

Learn to keep your phone is a safe, accessible place at all times. this can be especially hard for teen girls since they also have a strong desire to be fashionable and hip. Isn’t there safety important enought to be a little less fashionable?

Make sure that the phone is in complete silent mode. You do not need to know if someone is texting you or leaving a message. Disable all sound on the phone immediately. You need to learn to do this while the phone is in a pocket so that you can avoid detection.

Do not make phone calls. These can lead to getting the phone discovered which will make it much harder for the police to use it to locate you when it is disposed of by your assailant. Keep the phone safe at all costs.

If you follow these tips and learn some other basic survival techniques you will make it that much easier for the police to recover your teen, all thanks to a well used GPS tracking cell phone.

Locate Lost Cell Phone With GPS Tracking

Now for a rather trite example of the power of the GPS cell phone – finding a lost phone. Finding lost cell phones has never been easier – simple plop down in front of your computer, get on the website of your cell phone provider, and find the exact location of you teen’s or child’s phone at the click of a button.

Thoughtless kids seem to always be misplacing things and when mobile phones can cost hundreds of dollars, especially if they want the newest and most expensive phones on the market – like the iPhone. You can consider your GPS tracking to be a sort of insurance policy that also covers lost and stolen property. Imagine how easy it will be to calm your anxious teen’s fears that they just lost their $300 cell phone when all you have to do is log in to the computer to find out that they just left the phone in the car?

This type of GPS tracking is also pretty useful for recovering stolen property. A lot of the theft that goes on among teens occurs when other teens steal things from each other. It is really easy to tell is Ryan stole Jim’s phone when you log into your tracking account and find that the phone is sitting inside Ryan’s house. A quick call to Ryan’s parents or a well timed confrontation at a public place can easily return the phone to its rightful owner.

GPS cell phone tracking is not that great at recovering stolen property, but it could be used in that application if all other avenues have been exhausted. It really is better at located lost items because these usually haven’t been stolen and are generally sitting in the lost and found of some restaurant or movie theater.

Parenting and GPS Cell Phone Tracking

Wouldn’t it be nice if you could verify every story your teenager told you? GPS cell phone tracking can make that a reality. Some parents need a tool to help them keep tabs on their teenagers location. A rebellious, non-responsive teen can do a lot of damage to the world around them. They can impregnate or get pregnant, get into fights, sell drugs, drink, do drugs, engage in violent acts, rob, murder, and steal. These actions have a negative impact on the teen’s life and can create a future for them that they did not expect and you did not want for them. That is where GPS tracking can come in.

By giving parents the location of their child through their cell phone companies empower parents with the knowledge they need to confront their teen’s lies about where they were and what they were doing. The truth needs to rattle these teens if they are going to change their lives and become what we all know they can be.

If you are going to be tracking your teen for this purpose there are really two ways of going about it: the covert way and the overt way. The covert way seeks to gather up a slew of evidence for a shocking reveal where the teen is forced to come to grips with the life they are living. It keeps the tracking hidden to a certain point in time when the parent feels it is best to confront the teen.

The covert way has some disadvantages and advantages. The advantage is that the teen will be more likely to commit big lies that are easier to catch them in. They won’t be able to squirm their way out of it when they said they were at the movies but then the phone showed them at their girlfriends house the whole night! You can spring this fact on them and have them forced to come out with the truth.

However, this is also the disadvantage of covertly tracking them. If they turn the phone off or leave it somewhere your ability to get a reading on their location is obliterated. You may have to wait a long time before you find a situation strong enough to confront them on.

Then there is the overt method of tracking your teen. If they know that you can track their phone they might become more sly in how and why they lie to you. They might take cautious forays into falsehoods – leaving the phone at a friends house while they go out and party at the house next door, etc. However, when you track them overtly you will be able to set up a series of guidelines for them to follow that straying from will result in a series of punishments.

You can require that they leave their cell phone on when they are not at home, making it impossible for them to turn it off. You could also increase the severity of the punishment for each offense. The first time they just get grounded for a night, but by the third time you ground them for a whole month. The rules are the rules and your teenager should learn that.

GPS cell phone tracking isn’t a substitute for good parenting, is it simply another tool to be used that can aid parents in raising healthy teens.

As you can see, there is a lot that cell phone tracking can do for parents and their children. It can help keep them safe on the roads, safe when they get abducted, and safe as they test the waters of adulthood. It can be used to recover lost or stolen phones. Most importantly, GPS cell phone tracking for teenagers can give parents a sense of security and power. With this piece of technology in their hands they can make wise and useful decisions as parents that can have a positive impact on their teen’s live for the rest of their life – all thanks to a little box, a cell phone.

Cell phones are at least as common today, if not more so, as regular telephones. They are not even just for the western world anymore either – which is one of the main reasons for their hegemony in the world of communications. It is simply irreplaceable to be able to reach out and communicate with someone at great distances from anywhere in the world. You cannot do that with a old land line, but that can be your experience with a cell phone.

Because cell phones can reach out and touch someone from hundreds if not thousands of miles away they have become useful for a few other activities – namely GPS tracking. To understand just how GPS cell phone tracking works we must first take a look into the mechanics behind normal cell phones. By getting a strong foundation here we will be able to get a better understanding of how the GPS tracking component is introduced.

How Cell Phones Work

To start off I need to debunk the de facto myth that cell phones are some sort of powerful intercom ala Star Trek. They are not magical boxes that broadcast your voice into outer space that then gets beamed back to the earth, or at least most of them aren’t.

Instead, cell phones are simply radios. Certainly not simple radios – they are radios of a very sophisticated and advanced variety – but radios none the less. In most large cities, there are hundreds of cell phone towers that act as transmitters for the signals that originate in hundreds of thousands of cellphones that inhabit your major metropolitan area.

The hexagon grid is a great way to think about how cell phones work.

To get a better picture of how this works lets take a page from the old beehive, pictured to the left. As we all know, beehives display the beauty of the hexagon at work. Imagine that the entire beehive represents the city or county that you live in. If this is the case, then each hexagon represents a cell. At the center of each cell is one of our cell phone towers. This tower is responsible for collecting the signal from all the cell phones that are currently in use or are able to be used.

So as a bee travels from cell to cell they make use of a the cell phone tower for that particular cell. This has the benefit of keeping use levels on any one particular tower low and it opens up more channels to be used, increasing the amount of coverage a cell phone provider can give their customers.

These cell towers then contact a central process station – let’s call it the hive – where the towers communicate with each other. This is how on person in a cell all the way on the east side of the city can talk with a person on the west side of it. The power is simply amazing!

How GPS Cell Phone Tracking Works

Cell phones are just complex radios, but how does that allow people to turn them into GPS cell phone tracking systems? Like everything technological, it has a lot to do with math and geometry. It is all triangulation baby.

Because there are a lot of constants involved here – such as the cell tower’s position (or in the case of a truly GPS enabled cell phone, a satellite), the speed of the radio frequencies, and the cell phone’s ability to “ping” a cell tower for a signal – it just takes a few simple calculations and you can find out the exact position of any cell phone within range of two towers. It is obviously better if there are more than two, but two will suffice for the calculations.

Special Note: All cell phone tracking depends entirely upon being able to find a cell phone signal. This can be easier said than done, especially inside buildings. That is why a cell phone signal booster can be an important addition to any GPS cell phone tracking that you decide to do.

A Real Life Cell Phone Tracking Situation

Imagine that you are sitting around with your AT&Tcellphone in the middle of New York’s Central Park. Its an iPhone because you are hip and into being trendy. Most iPhones have turn by turn navigation on them which generally means there is some type of GPS tracking on these devices. AT&T is a fairly good cell phone carrier so you can expect to get a signal in Central Park. You are exploring and all of a sudden you fall, knock your head, and fall into the bushes just out of sight of passersby. Hours later you still lie unconscious and your loved ones become worried about your well being and contact the police. Your loved ones give the police your telephone number which they can use to put a trace on your cell phone, locating you as you lay under some bushes. This is GPS cell phone tracking at its finnest and all thanks to your AT&T cell phone, the police, and your iPhone.
